33sf Split air conditioning system

Post by schultz »

I’m thinking of removing the old cruise air split system with a new self contained 16,000BTU unit. The split system still works even after 42 years but the condenser/fan is only 3 ft from your head while try to sleep. It’s 82db and my wife is always complaining about it. Any advice on removing and replacing it with the necessary duct work.

Cliff, IF you can get this to fit, it is an superb unit. https://www.ctm-marine.com/marine-air-c ... ners/ct-16. On my FBC, the unit was about an inch to long. Then I was going to go with the Webasto platinum unit. Ended up taking the evaporator unit apart & fixing the blower.
Last season a friend replaced the Marineaire unit with the CTM. He loves it.

Thanks for the reply. It’s the unit I have been researching about. Good to know your opinion on it. It’s going to take quite a bit of effort but this fall I’m going to remove the split system and upgrade to this self contained unit.

Hi,

i made this change recently with a similar unit.
even if I'm happy with the change, there a few things i would change.

The initial system has one "blower" per area, e.g. one in the cabin and one in the saloon.
The new system, the one I placed and the one suggested below, has one only exit. Thus you need to adjust a splitter and then install big hoses to the initial ouput areas. This spltter unfortunately has a lot of loses. Therefore, i would look either for one unit that already has two outputs or consider to install 2 units, one per output area, even if the unit are smaller.

Good luck with the project!

Thanks for your response. I am planning on using the existing manifold that splits the fan air where the current evaporator/blower is located inside the port forward hanging closet. It’s a small plywood box sitting on top of the blower with a short 6” hose directing air into the cabin at the left front window and a 4” hose directing air into the v berth area. Did you run a new path for air distribution ?

Hi

The split systems do not have air hose from the main unit to the evaporators/blowers.
The new unit will have one air output and from there you will need to run air hoses. So considering that you need two main air hoses it would better to buy a unit with two outputs.

On my side I bought with one. And then I installed a spliiter. This runs ok apart from the days with a lot of heat (35+C). During these days I would like something with less loss and/or more power. It still does the job but I cannot achieve below 27-28 during the hot hours.

And one more tip.
I chose to install the new unit under the v berth for two reasons. First I can. I can now use the old space for tools etc.
secondly and most importantly, the all in one units release water from the evaporator. My unit has a base like a pan that collects the water. So now since the unit is higher, I installed a small hose leading the water to the shower box.
